Keäma Garrett ’15

Keäma Garrett grew up in Columbus, Ohio and studied Fashion Design at Kent State University. Following her graduation in 2015, she started her eponymous brand Keäma. “Empowering the community worldwide through style and grace” is her mantra, and is exemplified with her ready to wear and custom designs. Garrett takes inspiration from iconic black fashion designers such as Patrick Kelly and Misa Hylton as well as her grandmother’s impeccable style. As she says, her brightly colored tulle, striking African prints, and daring pattern combinations are designed for women “who aren’t afraid to stand out and be bold.” In 2020, Garrett designed a blue tulle gown for Beyoncé’s historic film, Black is King. In 2022, viewers of Netflix’s Inventing Anna caught a glimpse of a Keäma dress during a fashion show scene. For New York Fashion Week 2022, Garrett presented her collection for The Black in Fashion Council, whose mission is to showcase more black designers.
